Skin biopsy and excision

chirurgie mures

Skin biopsies may be required in the case of some dermatological diseases. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a piece of skin is obtained and sent for histopathological examination to process the tissue and cells in order to establish a definite diagnosis. This method is used for inflammatory or autoimmune skin diseases or to exclude or confirm carcinomatous changes in the skin.

After the area to be sampled has been selected by the doctor, disinfection, isolation and local anaesthesia of the skin follows.

We use three types of skin biopsies:

  • In the case of large lesions, the excision is done in an elliptical shape and the defect thus created is closed with surgical sutures.
  • The punch biopsy consists of removing a small cylindrical skin tissue with a diameter of less than 10 mm. It is not necessary to use sutures to close the defect, it will re-epithelialize itself.
  • The third form used is the 'shave' biopsy in which the lesion is removed from the skin horizontally using a scalpel. In this case, a superficial wound is obtained, which also does not require suturing.

After removing the skin tissue, the area is dressed with a sterile bandage. If surgical sutures are used to close the defect, they will be removed after 7 to 14 days, depending on the area affected.
