What is botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, is a protein neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, which acts locally in the muscles, temporarily blocking the transmission of nerve impulses from the nerves to the muscles. Thus, the affected muscles stop contracting and relax, causing the overlying skin to stretch, as a result the skin remains stretched and unlined while the untreated facial muscles continue to contract normally, allowing the person to remain with an unaffected facial expression. The skin will also take on a brighter colour as a result of local vasodilation with rich oxygenation of the skin.
Botulinum toxin type A has been used therapeutically for over 20 years for the treatment of strabismus, torticollis, facial spasm, bruxism and blepharospasm. Later botulinum toxin was used in the cosmetic treatment of facial expression lines

Expression lines between the eyebrows; Horizontal expression lines of the forehead; Dynamic wrinkles (crow’s feet) around the outer corner of the eyes; Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
Conditions causing a general decrease in muscle strength (myasthenia gravis); Pregnancy and breastfeeding; People on anticoagulant or anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, (botulinum toxin can be injected a few days after stopping treatment); Presence of facial infections; People under 18 years of age
Botox begins to take effect within 24 hours of injection. Results can be seen after 7-14 days based on comparative pictures taken before and after treatment. A check-up 15 days after the procedure is recommended to evaluate the result. Due to its mechanism of action, the effect of botulinum toxin lasts between 4 and 6 months and is influenced by dilution, injection area and individual tolerance. For a constant effect about 2-3 injections are needed per year.
